In 1827 the original owner Thomas Hippisley Jackson solicitor obtained the site by exchange from the Marquess of Exeter and afterwards built the property as offices for his own use. It was designed in the Gothic style with the front façade’s very distinctive central round headed window flanked by two point-headed doorways. Our main entrance was originally a through passage giving Thomas Jackson solicitor access to his office on his horse daily. The results from his Equestrian mode of transport can still be seen to this day in our stone hallway. The other door, formerly served the cellars which was in separate occupation and an area we have exciting plans for in the future, so watch this space…..
Described by Jon Betjeman as “England’s most attractive town” and by Sir Walter Scott as “The finest stone in England”, Stamford remains a beautiful town, regularly voted one of the best places to live in Britain by The Sunday Times. Stamford has played starring roles in television and films with “Pride and Predjudice” (2005) being filmed outside our building and around St Georges Square along with BBC’s Middlemarch.
Of course the main attraction to Stamford has to be Burghley house, one of the grandest Elizabethan mansons in all of England with its eighteen treasure filled state rooms, deer park, fantastic modern sculpture garden with ice house and Garden of Surprises. However, there are many wonderful sites to take in, so while you’re here, if you get the chance why not pick up a map from our tourist office, (which is just opposite) and experience all that Stamford has to offer with it’s wonderful Architecture and independent shops. If you’re thinking of making a weekend of it, then travellers have been stopping at the George Hotel of Stamford, the historic coaching inn on the Great North road for refreshment for more than 900 years.
A few fun facts about Stamford from Nicholas Rudd-Jones, publisher and owner of our very own Stamford Living magazine.
